Glorious Morning at the Resort

I went down to the lake with Delilah in tow. It was 7:30 or so, and the sun is shining big shadows as it is not yet high in the blue. Green is all around me and the creek was trickling it’s proof that a beaver is working tirelessly atop our waterfall. It’s not really “our” waterfall as it has been here before we came and will be so after we are gone, but for these times, I do claim ownership, nonetheless. The quiet gurgle and trickling sounds of endless, clean water add to the peaceful silence of the gentle breeze moving the leaves and the birds. You always can hear the birds if you listen for them.

Delilah and I moved swiftly down the paths. I walked on the same unchanging path rocks I have traversed from when learned to walk, making no noise and leaving no tracks as my dad taught me when I was a kid. The heavily wooded paths offered cover so Delilah and I were invisible. The lake was beginning to expand broadly before us. Then, the unmistakable smell hit me as is has for over 60 years of being here. It’s everywhere and it is accompanied by distant human voices murmuring in quiet relaxed tones from open windows. For as long as I can remember, the tones always sound comfortable. There is something distinguishable and comforting about humans who have no agenda and are simply living in the moment. Plans for the day are being made everywhere as that smell shrouds me like a blanket in all directions as we silently pass through the woods. It’s enchanting and always has been. Breakfast. Bacon, French toast, eggs, and definitely pancakes. The wafting temptation of maple syrup means everybody is happy.

At the beach, Alison from Cabin 2 was lounging on a dock with novel in hand soaking up the rising sun. She looked so comfortable, I asked her if spent the night there. Adjust a motor and boat I did and then moved it to a different dock in preparation for guests wanting to go for a mid-morning cruise. I returned to the gallery and once again noted the smell that I almost took for granted. It has always smelled like this. Smells like breakfast.
